Was Raffael Schuster Woldan an important and accomplished artist? We
have a painting done by him in 1931 and want to find out if it has any
value.Hello tony1:
Thanks for the interesting question.
I think the short answer to your question is that Raffael
Schuster-Woldan was perhaps accomplished, but not overly important -
certianly not considered "great". His paintings do seem to have value,
but in the range of $500 - $2000 each.
Most of the sites that mentioned Schuster-Woldan are in German, and
none that I could find contained much in the way of biographical
information. All that seems availble is that he was born in 1870 in
Striegau and died in 1951 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

However, I was able to find several German auction houses that listed
his paintings for sale (and/or for purchase). You may wish to contact
them for an online appraisal of your work.

StriegauThanks so much for your response on Schuster Woldan; my family had
always said that he had been the "court painter" for Kaiser Willhelm
which should have given him some status. Does this ring any bells?Hi tony1:
A search on Schuster-Woldan and Kaiser Willhalm didn't produce any
more information - though your information may very well be true! I
believe that Schuster-Woldan was well thought of by the Third Reich
leaders, however.

Quotes:
"In addition to military art, landscapes, agricultural themes, and
portraits of Nazi leaders, many of the paintings shown at the annual
Greater German Art Exhibitions were nudes. Many of these displayed
themes from classical motifs or from the 'cult of youth,' which
encouraged artists to celebrate the 'joyous blossoming of youthful
bodies,' frequently expressed in the acts of bathing, resting, and
awakening. Others portrayed the "hidden beauty" to be found in the
rustic lifestyle."
"Two depictions of Mars and Venus - on the left, by Ivo Saliger, and
Raffael Schuster-Woldan's 1942 painting on the right."
I hope this helps!
