How do I open msn_mail.msnbak ?

January 9th, 2009
  • I have created on "computer B" the file containing all my emails on that computer. I have moved this file, msn_mail.msnbak, from B to "computer A". How do I open this file now on A to have access to all the emails that were on B?

  • vcinvestor... What program did you use to create msn_mail.msnbak? sublime1-ga

  • Using Win98 I used a M'soft program to backup my emails. I can't seem to find my way back there. (Really pretty sad -must be going brain dead).

  • vcinvestor... To run Backup on your A machine, go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup. If you don't find it installed, you'll have to go to the Windows 98 CD-ROM and install it: 1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel and double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon. 2. Go to the Windows Setup tab and put a tick mark on BackUp (in Windows 98 it should be under Accessories). 3. Click OK and Windows will install this tool. I don't have Windows 98 handy, but once Backup is open, you should be able to go to the Restore tab, which normally shows a list of previously backed-up files from which you can choose the one you want to restore. Since Backup on this computer isn't the one that performed the backup, you'll need to guide the program to the backup file you copied to the new computer. Again, I don't have the Windows 98 Backup program, but what you're looking for is the Restore Wizard, which might be found under Tools. Running the Wizard allows you to point the program to any backup file, such as the backup file you copied. You don't say precisely what email program you were using and backed up on the B computer, or whether you've installed it on the A computer. In most cases, that would be the best way - reinstall the email program on the new computer (so that it is registered with the Windows registry), update it with any Service Packs or security updates, so it matches the installation on computer B, and then run Restore to restore the email content, folder structure, and preferences of your old installation. In most cases, that means instructing the Restore Wizard to overwrite any files it finds with the same name (the new email program will need to be closed during this process). This will also overwrite any new emails in your new email installation, if you have been impatient, and used it prior to restoring it. Ideally, you should then be able to open the new email program and see your emails restored. If you've already used the newer email program on computer A to send and receive mail, you'll need to 'merge' your old data with the new, in which case you'll need to restore the data from your backup file to some other temporary directory and copy files by hand to the new installation. Exactly how to do that will depend on the email program you're using, and would constitute a separate question with a separate answer, if you aren't able to determine this on your own. All of the above assumes you have Windows 98 both on the B computer and the A computer, since you didn't say otherwise. If the A computer is using a different operating system, it may be impossible to install and operate Backup from Windows 98 on the new system. In that case, you would need to find another means of transferring the email files from the old machine to the new one. Since you have the Backup program on the old machine, if it is still functional, you can always restore the files into a directory on the old machine, and use some other means (besides Windows 98 Backup) to transfer them to your new machine, such as zipping the entire directory structure and copying that to the new machine. Please do not rate this answer until you are satisfied that the answer cannot be improved upon by way of a dialog established through the "Request for Clarification" process. sublime1-ga
