I keep on wanting to change from religion to religion?

March 17th, 2010
  • Sometimes I think I will never find a spiritual home. I started out as a Christian, but soon found that I could not believe that God would torture most of his children. For a while I believed nothing really, but had a sense of spirituality.

Then I read the Bhagavad Gita and was seduced by the exotic images of God appearing in many forms. I loved the idea of God being part of nature and everything. For a while this felt right ...
Then I read about Wica and found the closeness to nature and cycles struck a chord. To much of it seemed to be silly spells, spinning crystals and that sort of thing. The idea of nonviolence in Buddhism appealed to me, but reading it seems like an intelectual exercise rather than spiritually fulfilling.
I read some Unitarian Websites, and it sounded like a fine community of free thinkers. After attending a chappel I found how wrong this was - it is a group of elderly people who worry about will "saying God" offend someone or other.
Watching a program about atheists, I can sympathise with their aim to build a human society free of many of the negatives that come from religions - but I am no atheist.

Actually I have been round the loop more than once, with Taoism, Wicca, Hindusim and Paganism all seeming to be right to me at different times. Is it my fault? Is it a lack of commitment to a path or do I ave to wait until God calls me clearly down one?

Perhaps I am doomed to wander a lonely path. All I know is that I cannot go back to the exclusive religions, so Christianity and Islam are out. How do you find a spiritual home?

  • Why do so many blame God for the work of the Devil?

God does not torture his Children.

Maybe you have not found the truth yet?

Search for the truth, you will know it when you understand it.

I studied for 20 years and then became Catholic.

    Peace and God Bless.

  • You can come back to Christianity. You have not committed an unforgivable sin. I know that hell is a harsh concept, one I have struggled with often myself. But I learned that God doesn't want people to go there either, and that it causes him much pain for people to go there. But he is still strong and righteous and has made up his mind on the matter. And, we sinners are not his children until we choose to love God and hate sin. Whether I like the thought of sinners going to hell or not, the TRUTH is what matters in picking a religion, not what you WANT to be true. Jesus died on the cross for our sins. God is real. You must pick the truth.

  • I suggest you to change and explore your own self rather than changing religions and all that.

  • You are searching to make an Intelligent decision. As you search you learn. Your heart will tell you when your search is over.

  • Your soul is hungry isn't it? Feed your soul and your spirit will quiet.

  • Merry Meet Jane,

There is nothing wrong with research and study. But you have to realize that many of the worldâ ™s religions say they are the only true way to deity. I suggest that you slow down on what you have learned and try to digest it first before moving on to new knowledge. In fact start meditating on you and your life, and how you perceive deity in it. This would be a good start to personal spiritualism, self exploration.

    Blessed Be

  • you might want to read the bible

  • In western christian culture, islamic culture, hinduism (and others), people are taught to look outside themselves for "god" and "spiritual fulfillment." The idea that what people refer to as "god" can be found within all of us naturally (without religion) and that people can be spiritually self-sufficient is seen as radical or crazy or sinful. Nothing could be further from the truth. A very wise man (Carl Jung) tells us that wholeness is the natural state of the psyche and collective solutions don't work for individual problems.

My journey was quite similar to yours. I didn't find "spiritual fulfillment"
until I stopped looking outside myself. The most profound spiritual or religious thing that ever happened to me is when I stopped believing
in "god". (There is no god when everything is god.) How can someone else know the best way for you to be religious or spiritually fulfilled?
If you can't find "god" within yourself, how can you find it anywhere else? Whether any of us like it or not, when it comes to religion and spirituality we are on our own.

You also might consider counseling, but be careful. It's very difficult to find a good counselor who has your best interest at heart and not an agenda to push on you. If you do decide to get counseling, don't be afraid to try different counselors until you find one you trust and feel comfortable with.

  • The fact that you are searching is good, and although it may take some time you WILL find your answers.. I am a Pagan, and in defense of Wicca, first I would like to know what you are reading? The garbage that has been printed in recent years is not worth the paper it is printed on (most of it not all) I am Elderpath which means I have been in the Craft long before it became a fashion statement and the recent generation have no sense, but that is society in general, overeducated but no common sense..
There is a component to Wicca that is more than silly spells, which I agree with you on that one.. many think it's reading a book, casting a spell and poof instant witch, and become Lady or Lord Know it All..
That is not who we are.. that is media hype.. there are many of us who are deeply religious and committed and work together..
Your answers will come, trust yourself, and forget about those who would try to make you feel guilty with the fire and brimstone routine.. Christ was an Essene and a very magical entity , and the devil is a Christian concept, he does not exist.. the church took our horned God, the sacred stag, and put horns on him and "the Gods of the Old Religion became the devil of the new"
I wish you well and Blessings..

  • I could only get so much out of any church so I had to keep moving also. If you just can't get it in one you have to move on until you are ready, then the teacher will appear. Experiment with the still small voice or your intuition and you may be able to see all. You can also stabilize your language by using only non-judgmental words to use the vision logic of the whole mind. Also using the linear logic of the left brain, it is so logical that you will be amazed. The output is all testable and should be tested, but only after you have used non-judgmental words for a while. Note that this is not the same as having good judgment and that is more accurately discernment. Emotional Intelligence should take care of emotional issues. Just get the gist of it as EI is used differently in different fields.

All that spiritual work will prove to be very useful. Science doesn't handle images very well or mental objects except with math and that is hard for most to relate too. Math is like speaking the language of the mind. What you should find is that many of the ancients used the brain this way and you will then be able to see, rather than think, what they meant. Thinking about a quality, qualia, is not to see or feel it. You see a color in your mind and it would be hard to put it into words. That is why it is so good to clean up the language to interface with vision logic better. It makes no judgments, just pictures and compares them for matches or mismatches and gives you a readout on request that shows the validity of something. It is so objective that it makes no difference between fantasy or not fantasy until it forms and compares pictures, 24 a second. Science says that it is a million times faster with that much more capacity too. That is as if we had over eleven days to think about something for every second on the clock.
Then I would suggest reading what Jesus said intuitively without any preconceived religious notion and it should be entirely different from anything you ever heard from religious people.

  • Look into your heart and find what is right for you. Where you find your happiness and sense of peace.
Try going to a Unitarian church again, I do and it is amazing. There are Buddhists, Pagans, Christians, Shamans, Spiritualist, Agnostics and we all learn from one another without persecuting the others beliefs.
I am a spiritualist, but if I had to classify myself I would be a Pagan. My husband is a Shaman.
Religion in itself helps people and has it's place on earth to give people a means of finding a higher power, a sense of peace, and security in an afterlife.
The point of life is to understand that everybody is here for a reason, everybody is interconnected, and we must learn from one another and from the world around to know ourselves and help others.
Believing in a power greater than you is humbling experience and gives direction and meaning to our lives.
There is something greater and we must realize this.

  • why not give islam a chance

  • Run to the Catholic Church, the Church that was founded by Christ himself. There you will find the real truth. Trace the History of the Catholic Church for yourself if you don't take my word for it. God bless you, and I pray he will guide you to the truth.

  • It is unfortunate to hear that you have chosen to reject Jesus, maybe it won't last.
To understand something, you first have to understand it (profound huh?). Ex: You say that you know God could stop the devil if He wanted to. This is a misunderstanding of how God has designed His kingdom to work. When God turned over dominion of this earth to man, (mankind), in Genesis 1:26, He at that point removed Himself from the equation as a direct contributor. Man then had to (and still does have to) live life and conduct duties as God had instructed if he wanted God to be involved (note the many examples in the Old Testement concerning sacrifices, cleansing, erecting structures, etc.). When man does things his own way (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25), God cannot participate because you have been disobedient and are now out of order. Here's how it relates to the devil. God designed His system in a way that requires man to give God permission to move in the earth (He couldn't even get Jesus here until he got the OK from Mary in Luke 1:26-38), so then, if you Do Not give Him permission then He cannot move. Those who end up in hell do so only by not following God's instructions on how to avoid it (Romans 10:9). God doesn't want ANYONE to go to hell (II Peter 3:9; I Timothy 2:3, 4), but if He just up and changed the rules for some, then He would be going against himself and that would make Him a liar, and He's not (Numbers 23:19). So in short, what God has set up to stop the devil can't work until you work it.

  • Your search for God is a divine one. It--as well as your life is a journey; and unlike the movies, may not end on the note you expect. It would be easy for folks to have faith if there was something tangible and prove-able to stand upon. In fact it could not be called faith if you just followed road signs telling you where to go to find God.

We are individuals for a reason, and you must find God within the limits of this world and your own life. No one can give you this answer; you must discover it and make it your own.

Take heart in that as long as you hold in your heart your desire to be with God, you will always be with him/her--no matter what church or group of people you are with.

  • At least your not trying to convert people because I hate when people try and convert other people

  • My impression is you're confusing following a religion with studying it. Finding the correct religion is frequently a very lengthy process. Just because a religion looks good at first look does not mean you'll ultimately agree with it. Slow down, take you time, keep studying, and try to figure out what it is you believe.

It may also simply be that your beliefs do *not* fall into an organized religion. In which case you may find yourself creating your own personal practice.

You seem especially in a hurry in your example about Unitarianism. You liked everything you read, but a single visit to one congregation turned you off? Perhaps you should try another congregation. To assume all Unitarian groups are full of old people because of one congregation is completely illogical.

  • I would say that Hinduism can give you all the things you ask for; closeness to nature and cycles (some Hindus fast on certain phases of the moon), oneness of nature, a peaceful outlook and a community of free thinkers (there is no dogma, there have even been atheistic Hindus such as Cavarka).

It does need commitment, so I would meditate on God, look for guidance and read the scriptures. Turn up at your local Mandir, you will be welcome whatever your beliefs.

  • That's a good thing, there is nothing wrong with trying out different faiths.
You should follow your heart to see what you truely belive is right.
Course, you don't need to have an organized religion to be happy.

  • As-salamou alikoum -Peace be with you, this is the greetings of all the Prophets of God.

Just as your carâ ™s engine runs on a mixture of fuel and air, you run on a mixture of spirit and physical sides. If you take care of the fuel intake system and ignore the air intake system in your car, it might run for a while, but it is domed to struggle, stall and finally to stop running. A perfect religion is one that satisfies both the spiritual and the physical sides of man. There has to be a balance between the two of course. But only God knows what is the best mixture of the two, just as the designer of that engine adjusts the mixture of fuel and air.

You probably have heard about MIND OVER MATTER. In the month of Ramadan, as Muslims, we learn how to do that. Your body learns to follow your mind even though it is not to the liking of your physical side. This is just one of the benefits of fasting. Worshipping God five times a day is another way to ponder upon both your spiritual and physical sides, as you have to do the worshipping in both ways.

Please donâ ™t tell me you have heard or read somewhere something negative about Islam, please consider the source, or that you have heard of some bad Muslim people. Lets be fair, intellect and logic: if we are going to hold a religion for what some bad people do in its name, then all the religions are bad. So, lets not do that.

Islam is based on answers for the questions our minds are always thinking of. It is based on giving reasons and explanations that are simple, logical and most of all convincing. This is the only way to get Muslims to be so convinced with the religion that we do our five daily prayers anywhere we are. It is the only way Muslims keep fasting during the day even though you could do anything while nobody is looking.

There has to be a reason why there are almost two million American converts to Islam from all walks of life. Please check one of these sites so that you would get a true idea about Islam.
