Are you pleased to learn that Thomas Jefferson's Qu'ran will be used to swear in the first Muslim congressman?

What would the great advocate of religious tolerance, pluralism and atheist Jefferson make of R&S, do you think? I bet he'd be ticked off with all the losers asking why atheists come here.

(Oh, btw, I am, but I'm even more pleased that Jefferson owned a Qu'ran, and actually applied his considerable brainpower to matters of religion and spirituality.)

  • I don't really care.

  • Heck no I'm not pleased. Who the heck is this clown that wants to remove a historical artifact from the archives just to pump up his own political career?

  • Ok i thought you meant swearing as in abuse.

  • It is not a law that a Bible has to be used. I wish I had kept the newspaper article that stated what presidents have not used any book, what one used a Law book, etc.,. If there is a book that has meaning to the person being sworn in, he should use it. Otherwise, he need not use any.

  • If he did use the Bible it would be the first time a Muslim ever looked at one.

  • Are sure he owned a Koran. Give me the source of proof now!!!

  • It is always wise to know your adversaries
The koran is evil. I'm sure Tom made a note of it
I have no way to correct the foolishness of that state, but they were fooled.
He will take an oath on a book that advocates to kill most Americans and lie about doing it.
Keith Ellison must have fooled many democraps but I am not surprised, with the hatred democraps have for us Americans.
I would put more confidence in a politician who took an oath on Hussler Magazine.
    We will see!
I bet he'll be worse than Ted Kennedy with his vile mouth.

  • Sure, why not. He will be taking an oath to serve this country. Of course he should use the Qu'ran. Using the Bible would be meaningless to him. And using Jefferson's Qu'ran, although a bit dramatic, would allow the public to more readily accept it. Just remember, our country was founded based on the principles of religious tolerance. Peace.

  • This is a good slap in the face to those who have been mislead into thinking that America is a "Christian Nation." Bless Mr. Ellison.

Let's hope there is no assassination attempt on his life because he is a Muslim.

  • Um.... goodie for him?

  • I don't care. minorities are beautiful.

    peace.

  • Yes. People are always trying to say this is a Christian country and the fact that he had that in his library shows the founding fathers' tolerance.

  • Disgusted

  • Thats good.

  • I don't care whose it was, I'm please for the guy... he's standing up in the face of religious zealots who are simply ignorant and arrogant, when he doesn't have to swear in on anything per the way things are set up. He's a breath of fresh air. Heard him on the Michaelangelo Signorile show standing up for himself and I applaud him.

  • I think that this country needs to embrace "freedom of religion" a little better and this is a positive step.

  • All fair points, I think. Thanks. Report Abuse

  • TJ considered himself a Christian, meaning a follower of the moral example of Jesus, but he was convinced that Jesus was not divine and that the early Christians doctored his life story, adding to what Jesus actually said and did for their own motives. Report Abuse

  • Islam is impotent always has been always will be and the only
thing it attracts are people stupid enough to believe their going
to heaven for blowing their own dumb *** up

  • I hadn't read that, but I believe in religious freedom and think Congressman-elect Ellison should be free to take his oath with his hand on whatever book he considers holy. Good idea choosing the Jefferson Qur'an. I'm surprised the Library of Congress is willing to let the book be used.

Remember people, the oath is what's important. Representative-elect Ellison is taking the same oath as everyone else. The Constitution requires that. It doesn't require that he do so with his hand on anything. It's the oath that matters--and that he follow through and "support and defend the Constitution" and "faithfully discharge the duties of the office" by representing ALL his constituents (of various faiths and moral philosophies) to the best of his ability.

  • LOL.. I think it is great..Good thing to know the founding fathers had some religious tolerance and imagine that other religions actually existed and were studied during the time of our country's creation.

  • 'Yes I am more than pleased. Though I confess I didn't know Thomas Jefferson had a Quran. I am pleased the congressman will be sworn in on a book of his own religion.

  • I thought he was a deist, but it is really cool to hear that people kept his Quran. I'm actually proud that we,as Americans, were open minded enough to keep it around. So many artifacts from Jeffersons time have been lost.

  • Thomas jefferson wasnt an atheist. He was a deist and unitarian. Meaning he rejected the idea of the trinity and that Jesus was divine. He also edited the gospels to only include Jesus's statements and left out the four evanglelists.

To answer the question, yeah it is ok if thats what he believes in.

  • TJ wasn't afraid to question. In any case, if he were alive today, he would certainly NOT be among them moaning and wringing their hands because a native-born American, duly elected by Americans, is taking the same oath as all the other newly elected members of the House of Representatives today. • Only in America!
And yes! May God bless America!

Maybe you will be also pleased if the government in Saudi Arabia allow christians to practice their faith, read their christian Bibles in Public, and wear a cross around their necks.
Then, and only then will I say.....God bless Saudi Arabia!'

  • ROFL, sorry, I had to pick myself up.

My, my...aren't we trying to stir up trouble???

    Not gonna happen...lol

    (Besides, TJ wasn't muslim.)

  • Yes God bless America.
