No More Worthnothing Cup

January 7th, 2009
  • LONDON, June 24 (Reuters) - The English League Cup will have a new name next season after Coors Brewers Limited signed a three-year deal with the Football League.

The competition will be known as the Carling Cup, replacing Worthington, another of the Coors brands, after which the cup has been named for the last five seasons.

  • The Careless Cup? :D

As a Leicester City fan, I do see your point ;)

Leicester City: League Cup winners 1964, 1997, 2000. League Cup runners up, 1965, 1999.

That's three times in the last seven years that Leicester City have been in the League Cup final. And they never win it, you said?

  • I'm not sure exactly how the gate revenue is split for cup ties but I don't think it would be a bad idea at all for bigger clubs to chip in more of the ticket money or program sales to smaller clubs.

A televised game against a Premiership club would be a massive finiancial boost to a Third Division club.

  • But in this case, we really are talking about a meaningless tournament because the stronger sides don't field their best teams (at least not until the late rounds).

I would like to see a U.K. cup replace this one. Include all league teams from the U.K. and I think that will add some spice to the competition.

ok point taken i did forget about when you won it in 2000 but surely you more than anybody realise that that helped you financially and brought the cup some glory ? And im sure when you were in the final and were winning it you werent saying that it was worthnothing then, be honest ?

  • Last season, ManUre put a fairly strong side out throughout the tournament, which is a reason the prawn-eaters made it to the final against Lousypool.

It maybe a 'meaningless cup' to all those so-called supporters who follow 'big' clubs.
But to fans like us who are in the lower leagues, its a life-line to us.
A couple of years ago our average crowd was only 6,000 yet we played Spurs over two legs, the home leg was a sell-out 13,000 whilst the away leg was 20,000+
This was essential to us financially and will continue to be so.
Two season ago we where lucky enough to draw Newcastle away, and desptie losing gave us a great-day at.
Think about all 92 clubs mate not just ManU and Arsenal!
