Asian teen actress? What are my chances?

March 13th, 2010
  • i'm a 15 year old Korean-American teenager, and i really want to be on Disney Channel! everyone keeps telling me how the entertainment industry is so hard to break into, but i feel like im just waiting to be discovered (not to brag or anything cause i really don't have that much experience, but i think im more of a natural.) i would love to do what selena gomez and demi lovato are doing, and im an obsessed with the jonas brothers, so i feel like my target audience is a younger crowd like disney channel. does anyone have any advice on what i should do? its not too late, is it? like where can i get acting lessons in the houston area and get an agent, etc? if anyone has any other helpful tips, that would really really help me!

thanks so much for your time!

  • well i know this may not sound true but you actually have a reallyyy good chance in this, mostly because your asian. i am in acting and there are to kids who are indian and they dont even act good but we all went to vegas for a convention, and they got a lot of contracts!! also check online, to go to the convention you have to audition, you can sing, dance, act, or model, not that it is 5,000 dollars just for the student to go! but you can have a parent which is about...10,000 or...there is a place called john robert powers and its for the same as ipop ,singing, dancing, modeling, and acting, but its 5,000 dollars and you can make payments and it lasts a lifetime there so yeah hope this helps!!!! oh also i suggest you google...there is probaly one in where you live because there is one in every state, i would google it and on the website it has locations of where it is so hope i helped!!! ohhhh one more thing lolz the website for ipop is ipopconvention.com and trust me, the convention is worth it!! you will get good experience and stuff, now i hope i helped!!!!!!!!!!

  • look for a community theatre, or school plays. try to take acting classes too. work your way up.

  • There are no rules in show business. regardless of how you look, weigh or talk. But it also filled with a world of nay sayers. Anytime I hear someone say they are a natural, I think naturally bad. We all need training and workshops,. Me included... I was so bad I could only get better

  • I think you have some chances. I'm 15 and I'm also trying to get into acting. I practice acting by myself since there are no acting programs/theaters in my area. I'm planning on going to a good arts boarding school(for one year), then moving to texas to further my career because I have no relatives in places like California. I'm going to try and find and agent. My uncle lives alone so he'll probably help me with my career.

I think they want more actors of other races like asian, indian, etc. because they want more diversity in shows and movies now-a-days.

  • WHY?

Actors on kids shows have a career anywhere from a few months to a few years, and that's IT! Do you hear about Tamera Mowry? Raven Simone? Hillary Duff? Not really. Tamera has done nothing in the past few years (her sister Tia is in a failing CW sitcom), Raven's roadtrip movie flopped, and Hillary Duff is a B-rated celebrity at best. Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, etc. etc. are going to be in and out of the spotlight!

If you want to be an ACTOR in GENERAL, look into community theatre. If you're "too good" for community theatre or school plays, you're not. At all. Get out and audition! Anywhere and everywhere! If you get parts under your belt, agents and casting directors will be more sure about you. Newbies rarely EVER get casted and, if they do, they already have family in the buisness!

Think about it: you have a baby, and you love your baby. You have a choice between a nice lady who's been reccommended from countless other parents with a long track record of good babysitting, and a teen kid who has never so much as changed a diaper, but promises she's "really good". Who would you choose?

Producers, directors, casting people, etc. spend a LOT of money out of their own pocket, especially when they're just starting out. Why oh WHY would they put all their hard work on someone who has no experience?

Look at Selena Gomez: She has been getting acting jobs since she was a little kid. Her first break was on Barney. Years and years went by with little or no jobs, but one day, Disney Channel took a liking to her. She started appearing in DC shows like "Suite Life" and whatnot, then, after a few YEARS of working, landed her own show!

Did she walk into a casting call and walk out with a show? No. No, she didn't.

Now, this isn't to say you shouldn't follow your dreams. If you really want to appear on Disney Channel (or just be an actor in general) go for it! But know it's a LOT of hard work.

As most acting teachers say: If you can think of ANYTHING you want to do more than acting, do it, as you will be a million times more successful.

If you want REALLY good advice, here's an acting advice blog Jenna Fischer (who stars in The Office on NBC and is PHENOMENAL) wrote:

She started out in a small, land-locked town with no where to go, and now is AMAZING! She won an Emmy. She knows her stuff.

    Good luck!!

  • considering this is Disney Channel we're talking about....well, that pretty much sums it up. Have you noticed not everyone is talking about the Jonas Brothers so much anymore....other than what they are? You'll never get into it, period.
