  • What was Berhalter thinking on that play when he gave away the ball?!?!

Good lord, JUST CLEAR IT YOU BOZO!

  • Adriano is the Brazilian Emile Heskey.

  • US got robbed on the PK. But then again, there is no guarantee they would have scored, given Dida's mastery against PK.

Brazil still doesn't look convincing. The Adriano goal was more a defensive mistake than anything.

All the US has to play for now is pride, but unfortunately CMR will be playing out the next game too. 1st place in the group is still up for grabs. The difference means playing COL/JPN or France (in France).

  • Adriano is big and strong, not espcally quick, has a left foot, and can't finish with his right and is awful in the air.

  • Well, sure it's all B players, but the impression is that the US has comprehensively demonstrated we are well outside the ranks of the elite teams. Two games and out. Some good play, but mostly the sort of mediocre play we know so well from our B teams on not very good days. I'm just disappointed that Arena didn't really take this tournament seriously.

  • You guys are over the top with this HOWARD GREAT SAVES crap...Howard made saves he SHOULD have made, that doesnt make him this GREAT keeper. He made saves that most keeps would make today, nothing EXTRAORDINARY...so get over it!. Its bad when all you can do is brag about a goalie making saves. DIDA himself had a great save, no difference.

3 games in 5 days; you have to make sacrifices somewhere. To me it looked like Bruce put the best team he could find on the field today against Brasil. Can't really fault any lineup decisions. Would have liked to seen more of Twellman in this game however.

I don't thik peolpe realize how much we miss JOB, Reyna, and Mcbride. I think the USA have shown pretty well actually. When I think back to less than 2 years ago, and how horrible we looked w/o Reyna/JOB in our qualifiers, I'm fairly impressed. There were times we sucked so badly in the last couple of years, it made the WC such a great surprise.

Just keep in mind that we've had some unbridled optimism for the last year - when if Korea hadn't done us a favor, we'd have been sent home very early. Try to take it in perspective. The USA still can play well - but it's obvious we don't have much depth, and getting ready for the WC06 is just going to take us most of 2-3 years. What do you expect after we get rid of 90% of a VERY veteran team??

  • Two observations from this depressing game:

    1. The US defense was completely outmatched. One need only look at Ronaldinho's jersey for evidence of this :-)

    2. Clint Mathis started this game with high expectations, and ended up leaving a big turd on the field.

I thought Mathis had a good game today, and was also impressed by Howard, espically his postioning which made the saves look relatively simple.

  • Painful loss today, especially when we could have walked away (even if luckily) with a tie.

Let's hope Arena sticks to his formula of "trying out" players and starts a lineup of newbies and younguns against Cameroon. Donovan, DMB, Stewart, Berhalter, Mathis should not start that game. Howard yes, for experience. He's got to get Martino, Twellman, Cunningham, Gibbs and Convey in there for long stretches on Monday.

Defensive lapse or not, it was the difference in three points. I warned - Adriano's power would be a bit too much for a weak central backline. And that proved true. Any sign of wekakness - the strikers exploit.

All in all, the US was overmatched pretty much at every set. Better ball control by Brazil, just a poor effort IMO by the US. Brazil - they didn't look stellar but they weren't, and no offense to the US team, really pushed.

Oh well. Next is Cameroon - and they too are dangerous. For Brazil - next is Turkey.

  • Turkey will beat Brazil. They'll be well up for the game after the World Cup matches, and this Brazil team looks weak and vulnerable.

Cameroon - France in the final would be a good battle.

what pk? when donovan was taken down after he had already kicked the ball well wide of goal?

The US went some way in trashing their good reputation after the World Cup. Even if they win the gold cup that won't register with anybody outside of CONCACAF. The team is capable of much more than they showed today.
It's very dissapointing I agree to a certain extent. It certainly seems to me like Bruce Arena didn't take it seriously enough. There were some crap decisions in the lineups.

However, like someone else said, I'd rather find out players can't play in the Confederations Cup than find out they can't play in a World Cup Qualifier. I'm just chalking this one up to experience and growing pains.

    yuck.

U.S. needs to be more tactically mature when they have the ball. their counterattack looks basically like two teenagers drag-racing. that's fine and well but they even counterattack when the Brazilian defense is already composed in the back. so it looks like two teenagers drag-racing into oncoming traffic.

Why not take the time and wait for all 20 field players to get on the Brazilian side first and then start attacking?

  • Thanks to the poster of the Korean video feed. It was a little jumpy at times, but better than nothing.

Some things I saw from this game:

Determined Berhalter is done with USMNT play. Thanks, Greg. Au revoir.

Howard's going to do well at Man U. Good solid game.

LD is smart to stay in MLS. He'd get lost like he did today if he went back to Europe.

Beasley raised his stock. Should get some offers out of this.

Used to like Klein and disagreed with those that said he's too slow. Not so sure now .....

Lewis has improved in the last year. Played well.

Adriano is really big and strong, has good speed, has good feet and can finish. Other than that, he's not very good.

    It's very dissapointing

  • Well, there were some bright sparks every now and then, as I'm sure we'll see a bit of magic on Monday. More impressive second half but obviously not enough. About what I expected, except for the scoreline. Hopefully it's something to build on for the Gold Cup.

If you'll excuse me, I have a box of comfort food labeled "Dunkin Donuts", then I'll come back and rip on Berhalter and Gibbs et al.

  • YIKES! That was ugly. Do we have to show up for Cameroon .....?
