R&P, What are Your Thoughts on Johnny Cash?

January 8th, 2009
  • I know he is classified as "Country" music, but I can think of few people who were more Rock than Johhny.

He was a rebel in a time and music genre that did not allow for rebellion.

Do you like his music? Do you think he transcended Genre?
What is your favorite Cash song?

  • The Man In Black was a legend, and in My opinion he transcended all Genres.

Actually My favorite Johnny Cash song is one of His very last.."When The Man Comes Around", that song gives me chills.

  • Johnny Cash was great! I got to see him and June Carter in concert at least a half a dozen times in the 60's and 70's and they always put on an excellent show!

    Some favs,
    Cry, Cry, Cry
    One Piece At A Time
    Ring Of Fire

  • he was a great entertainer and a fellow Arkansan.

i doubt ill ever tire of hearing most things he ever did.

i know that his life is a shining example of "what could have been" but most of the really great ones have that flaw.

i also know that i almost always include him on my "fantasy band" line-ups...or i did when i did...

    now playing:the trees - rush

  • I love Johnny Cash. My dad and uncle have formed a kind of family "band" (for our ears only) and JC is one of their favorites to cover, which is what got me into his music and I am so happy to have discovered a type of music I probably would not have listened to otherwise.

    Favorite song: Folsom Prison Blues

  • He was an awesome man who sung awesome songs with an acoustic guitar. I liked him. He also said he smoked weed into his 60s.

  • I LOVE Johnny Cash. One of my favorites. Once during a long car ride we played Ring of Fire no less than 8 times in a row and sang along the entire time. And lets just say that with some of the other people in the car...it brings back good memories every time I hear it.

What is with all this genre stuff? Do you want to say he is Rock just because he is amazing? Why isn't it good enough for him to be an amazing Country singer? Do you have to automatically assume that Country is a bad thing?

  • Great respect for him & I'd love to buy some of his albums.

But after seeing this famous photo & why he did it, I knew he was a true badass!

  • words can't describe how awesome i think he is. you have to listen to his music to understand

i like any song i hear by him

  • Johnny Cash is one of my favourite artists. Actually, I think he's my very favourite artist outside of metal and classical.

I'm not sure what my favourite Cash song is, they're all too good :)

And all this from someone who can't stand Modern country music.

  • I think he was a great musician. He isn't really 'heavy' country, either. In fact, he sounds like a lot of the Classic ROCK musicians.

  • Johnny Cash is a classic and can never be replaced. He was a great country musican.

  • JC Is on badmotorfinger in my humble opinion. I love his music. My gramps got me hooked on him and thinks of gramps every time I hear JC.

Favorite Cash song is Boy Named Sue

  • I do like his music, and yes I agree he was quite rock-like ;)
My favorites are the classic "Ring of Fire" and "I Walk the Line."

  • He's cool. I like how most of his songs use the same few elements but they all don't sound cookie cutter.

I like "one piece at a time" is a funny story.

  • He's good.

  • I love Johnny Cashs music, He definately went between genres song by song. My favorite song is "A man named Sue"

  • I love Johnny Cash, I have to be in a certain mood to listen to his music, but I'm a big fan. My favorite is I Walk The Line :)

  • I looove johnny cash! I don't think he's country either! He had rough life....I like the song "Jackson".

  • Haha, I saw this Q in RHH. I was going to answer this there.

Anyway, I've heard a couple of his songs before and I really enjoyed them. I don't know the names but I liked it. I've been meaning to get into him but I have no idea where to start.

  • I love Johnny cash. I remembered when he died, I was in a metal bar and they played his music all night long. The man was a rocker. He had the attitude and the credibility to back it up. He was a music God , as you say.

Folsom Prison Blues, love it. His cover of Hurt was incredible. It was haunting.

  • I consider him more country than rock, but I believe you had it right when you mentioned him transcending genres. His image is larger than life, anyway. It makes sense that he's too big for a single genre, I suppose. He was definitely 'harder' sounding than most country musicians back then. But there are a few others that sounded similar that somehow failed to break through the boundary of genres.

I love Cash. My favorite song of his is "Walk the Line," probably--but there are plenty of others that are really close (like Folsom Prison Blues). However my favorite song that he contributed to is "Highwayman" by The Highwaymen. I like it better than any of his solo work.
