Windows Vista And Software?

January 8th, 2009
  • I know Vista has improved a lot BUT im about to get a new computer and im using XP right now and i was hopeing does any one
    know
    or
can list programs THAT STILL DO NOT RUN ON VISTA OR HAVE ISSUES WITH.... if there is any ...

  • If there is any conflicts. Just run it in compatibility mode.

  • Just about everything that works on XP works on Vista. Don't believe the myths about Vista. Vista is actually a very good operating system and I find it far superior to XP.

  • limewire last time i tried, i hasd to recover my machine on each start until i uninstalled it. it is still uninstalled on my comp (yes im running vista home primium)

  • I do not find many such problems now. If I buy one, I check to see that it specifically includes Vista in the OS's.

Any problems, and one can usually get up-to-date drivers fom the website.

Some of the programs on disks with computer magazines do not work with Vista, so check carefully.

I am very pleased with Vista, when once I got used to it.

  • STEAM BIG TIME!!! do not get vista i just built a pc with XP cause steam by valve) does not work at all!!! I guess u don't care if u don't know what it is because u wouldnt b asking this if u used Steam

  • Unless the software specifically states that it will or will not run on Vista, I don't see how you can know if it will work until you try it. There are, however, two things you can try:
    1. Contact the manufacturer of any questionable software and ask them if they know of any compatability problem and if so, if they have prepared a fix.
    2. Vista has a "Compatability Wizard."

    1. Vista's graphics engine is one element guilty of causing compatibility conflicts. Sometimes it will stop programs from installing but, usually, you won't find out there's a problem until after the installation is complete. If you're prompted to check for updates online, this will often rectify the problem.
    2. The Aero interface can also cause problems, preventing some older programs from displaying correctly. However, if you can install the application and launch it then Vista will deal with the problem automatically, switching to the Vista Basic (non-Aero) interface while the program runs.
    3. If the problems are more complex, Vista's Program Compatibility wizard will usually provide a fix -- with the exception of low-level utilities, such as antivirus software. Open the Control Panel and select the Programs icon to access Compatibility mode. This deals with all aspects of running software on your PC.
    4. When you click the Programs icon, you should see a link that reads 'Use an older program with this version of Windows'. This starts the Program Compatibility Wizard, which will guide you through various features that may prevent your software loading. This doesn't work with all apps, but it'll fix the vast majority.
    5. Browse to the problem application or choose it from a list of the programs on your hard drive. Alternatively, select CD-ROM for software that has not yet been installed. Click Next and select the operating system you wish to emulate for this application. You can choose anything from Windows 95 to XP.
    6. The final stage of the wizard offers a series of troubleshooting options to help get a program working. Options include not using themes, running in basic screen mode and, tackling the most likely culprit, the option to disable desktop composition. A program may also require administrator privileges to run correctly.

  • i havnt come accross a program that wont work yet! infact some of the games that wouldnt work on xp, work on vista!

will scan all your software and hardware and telol you what will and wont work. you wont need the hardware part though.

and as suggested, you can run programs that dont work in compatability mode.
