What is the Nepalese meaning for the word Yeti?

March 18th, 2010
  • I need to know the meaning of the word in English for the name Yeti.

  • Yeti is derived from the Tibetan Sherpa language. I have found two different meanings:
    - According to Wikipedia and Monstropedia, yeh-ti, is a compound of the words yeh, meaning "rocky" or "rocky place", and pe-tah, which translates as "bear", the full name being "rock bear".
    - According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the Sherpa (Tibetan) word yeh-teh means: "small manlike animal."
In Nepalese, the creature is called "Bonmanche" which means "wild man" or "Kangchenjunga rachyyas" which means "Kanchanjunga's demon." Kanchanjunga is the 3rd highest mountain in the Himalaya and the world.

  • As far as I am concerned, Yeti is Yeti in English. There is no translation for that.

  • abominable snowman
