Atheists: Has your experience on R&S bettered or worsened your opinion of atheists in general?

March 11th, 2010
  • Spin off of the question asked a minute ago, I'm curious what atheists think of the other atheists on here. Do you think they make us look better or worse?

  • Not worsened, not bettered.

  • They make me want to piss myself laughing. They are usually well adjusted, educated and like a good laugh, I hope some are my friends also. Sometimes I think about some of their questions when I am at work and I actually do let out a snort of laughter.

  • Hey that was my question :-)

I think my experience here on R&S has generally bettered my opinion of my fellow atheists. I did not have a negative opinion of atheists prior to coming here - I actually did not know any. R&S was the first place I ever encountered such like-minded people and I am very greatful for the people I have met here as I have learned much from them and I have also learned a lot about myself through my interactions here on R&S.

  • Worsened, but no more so than the alt.Atheism usenet group. Many atheist can be just as irrational as any fundamentalist.

  • I feel at home among atheists...

  • I welcome them

  • Most of them seem to be witty, sarcastic, intelligent, and fun people. But a few make me wince when I read their answers, because of the hypocrisy. The worst are the ones who have some kind of virulent hatred for a particular religion (usually Christianity or Islam). They let their emotions get the better of them and resort to logical fallacies in order to smear a particular group. As a group, we tend to pride ourselves on logic and reason. Because of this, we should take extra care to keep our emotional responses in check, so that we don't appear hypocritical. For some reason, the trolls who have something against Muslims seem to be particularly lacking in reasoning skills, the generalizations that they make are absurd to the nth degree...

  • I think these other Atheists are pretty kick-***.

  • We are the coolest. I don't agree with generalisation, but there are some very clever Atheists out there.

  • My experience here on R&S has bettered my opinion of my fellow atheists in general, and confirmed my opinions of christians in particular.

Overall, I think the atheist participants on R&S are intelligent, articulate and thought-provoking.

  • I like most of them.

But since the only common "belief" we have is disbelief in god(s), there's plenty of room to disagree on other issues.

  • I usually find myself taking the side of the atheists (I'm deist), but I have seen some bad behaviour too. When a new Christian shows up and starts asking questions about the Bible and does so respectfully I never like to see a pack of atheists descend on him like vultures. It IS the religion and spirituality section after all, and people should be free to ask questions, as long as they're not bigoted or hateful, in peace.

  • I don't believe in God but also don't call myself atheist because I don't like to be associated with the jerkoffs that call themselves atheist.

  • I think all the atheists here everyone here is pretty cool headed. 'Cept me. I'm a lover and a fighter.

  • Ha ha ha, exactly the same answer.
I suspected that other atheists would just bite the big one, and that I'd wish they'd stop talking. I was correct. Other atheists are quite respectable, though.

We don't know why Y!A suggests some of the things it does...it's just crazy sometimes...

  • Same. Some are good and some are bad.

  • Worsened, definitely.

  • I think some of the atheists on here have an awesome sense of humour and a quick wit.

  • My experience on R&S has reinforced my belief that despite what a site-host may try, the internet was created to further the flame wars.

This says nothing about people that have a belief (or lack one,) and everything about people that have nothing better to do than mouth off.

  • They are pretty much the only Atheists I know, so very positive, intelligent, funny.

  • Same answer as before. I don't form opinions on anybody/sect/race/idea based on what I read on the internet...that's still just silly.
