Two questions, is this normal and is my house haunted?

March 18th, 2010
  • My house was supposedly built in the 1940's and it has the structure to prove it. Just today I was coming upstairs and at the top step I heard I was just trying to relax one day when I here knocking coming from my mothers closet. I have lived here long enough to tell the difference from an old house settling and something else. About 2 months ago a friend was staying the night so as I was coming up the steps behind her she was in my room. When I was setting up her bed I heard stomping up the steps. We were the only ones awake. But this story really stumps me, I shut my door. Ten minutes later I had to pee so I tried to open the door and the door knob kept on turning around and around. They are old skeleton key doors but my door could still be opened from the outside! Is that normal?

  • The door handle spinning around part definetely isn't normal. It sounds like there could be some ghost activity in the premesis. I suggest you use soem spiritual remedies to cleanse your house. Insense can be quite useful in clearing houses to a certain extent, especially certain scents. There are more effective ways to treat your house though. There is a long list of spiritual remedies for clearing houses on www.spiritualresearchfoundation.org, just make sue you click on the spiritual healing or remedy sections. Theres also lots of information on ghosts and why they hassle us. Id do soem clearing just in case. Better safe than sorry. :)

  • Well, its normal for a house that old to be haunted, and from what you say I believe it is.
The noises and turning door-knob are probably harmless poltergeist activity. Poltergeist can not cause much harm, usually just move objects, make sounds, and offer a distraction. Usually they just want you to notice them because it flatters them. If they are really bad, just let them know that you know they are there and then simply sing to yourself or hum.
If there are a few, u might notice a draft when all the windows are closed or a few occasions of ringing phones when no one is calling. If you ever feel you are in danger though, contact a professional.

    hope it helps!

  • It seems normal to me that after 68 years some of your door handles are going to be worn out or broken.

So did you look in the closet to see if anything in it was making the noise?

  • The door knob part is pretty normal for those old doors. I have lived in several places with those door knobs and that does happen.

I dont know about the knocking in the closet. Could it have been the first time you had the heat on? Some heating systems pump hot water around a house.

I have explored a number of strange sounds which sounded like ghosts, but all of them have turned out to be something else.
In Connecticut I lived in an apartment which me and my wife heard a rythmic thumping in the kitchen, but it would stop when we got into the kitchen. It continued for several nights periodically, until I found out what it was. There was a food container sitting on a shelf and a mouse who really wanted to get inside. The mouse was rhythmically pulling at the top and in doing so was thumping the container on the shelf.

In my current house, the heating system kicks in and makes all the floor board contract. It sounds like someone walking down the hallway.

Investigate the sound, you might be surprised what you find.
