My house was supposedly built in the 1940's and it has the structure to prove it. Just today I was coming upstairs and at the top step I heard I was just trying to relax one day when I here knocking coming from my mothers closet. I have lived here long enough to tell the difference from an old house settling and something else. About 2 months ago a friend was staying the night so as I was coming up the steps behind her she was in my room. When I was setting up her bed I heard stomping up the steps. We were the only ones awake. But this story really stumps me, I shut my door. Ten minutes later I had to pee so I tried to open the door and the door knob kept on turning around and around and I was locked in my room! That was yesterday and it still is messed up! They are old skeleton key doors but my door could still be opened from the outside! Is that normal?I dont think the footsteps and knocking is normal, but maybe it could just be the old house.
Id still try to cleanse your house out, just incase.
Have you heard any voices or seen anything move location? Then you might have something to be concerned about. I wouldn't be too worried if I were you. Anyway you will know if the foot steps sounded authentic or just creaks. What do you personally think? If you think there's something more to this thing then your probably right.Old pipes knock sometimes. You have to open up the wall and attach them solidly to a stud if it bothers you.

This works!Why don't you get a screw driver and take the door handle off and have a look at the mechanism to see if it is faulty? It sounds like whatever connects the handle to the latch has broken on one side.
I'm not understanding how you can think that something breaking is paranormal?
Again, Ive lived in two places with these style doorknobs and yes its quite normal. With the style of lock on skeleton key doors it is very possible to lock it from the outside and not be able to get out, however what you describe sounds more like a "past tenant" just making sure the door is locked. I've lived in haunted houses since I was 7 and I've tried to debunk what I've seen and heard a number of times, and there just isn't an explanation. Doors lock and unlock of their own accord in the house I'm in now, electrical appliances do their thing without being plugged in, it's weird. The footsteps I've been through too. I know people always say it's just the house settling, but there's only so far that can go, you know? Eventually, especially after 60 or so years, that house is settled. I'd wager the foot steps sounded like big steel toed work boots, right? That's what we heard in a house before. It was odd to say the least. A person before me said you may want to cleanse the house and I'd agree with that. Get some salt and pour it around the perimeter of your house. That will generally take care of it.
