How come atheists don't at the very very least, repent for their sins?

March 15th, 2010
  • Or I should say "bad things that you've done in your life". We've all done them, it's just part of being human, but Jesus said unless you repent, you too will likewise perish, so how come atheists at the very very least say they repent. It can't be that hard to do that right?

  • Who says they don't? Man, you're generalizing. They just don't repent to a hypothetical, supernatural being. An atheist more often than not feels guilt for something he or she believes they've committed wrongdoing in. The difference is, they don't believe in "sin"--they simply believe in right and wrong, and have varying definitions of it, usually not based off prejudice like homophobia, etc. that's paraded in the scriptures.

  • If you are an athiest then you don't believe in any kind of God or higher power, so who are you supposed to repent to? Seems kind of pointless to repent sins to God when you don't believe in sins or God.

  • Making amends is a human to human interaction.

Religion is a myth. There is some truth in myth, but that truth is symbolic, not literal.

  • If you use the term "be sorry for" the "bad things" we've done in life--then atheists are humans just like you--we are sorry for some of the things we've done in life--and have done so without the need for a carrot and stick--we just do it because it is human to do so.

  • Repent to whom?

How do you know that they have not sought forgiveness for the mistakes that they have made? But it would be stupid of them to seek it from something that does not exist when it needs to be sought from those that do.

You just made a huge assumption and claimed something that is not true. That is bearing false witness. Who will you seek repentance from for this sin?

  • You're welcome! Report Abuse

  • Define repentance, then hold that definition as a yardstick with which to measure your own efforts.
When your heart is pure, then you may speak to me of repentance, for then, and only then will it be more than just a word to you.

  • I've never sinned.
Sin is a man-made concept invented to instill fear and exercise control over others.
As for repenting any "bad things that I have done in my life" who would suggest I repent them to.A god?
    Silly thing,you forgot,I'm an atheist I don't have a belief in gods.

  • The reason they don't repent is because they don't even believe in the one they would repent to.

  • Sin is only a man made word.

I have never done anything that would require someone die for me to "save" me.

Supposedly god sacrificed himself to himself to save us from a place he created because Adam received knowledge.

No, thanks. God gave me common sense.

  • If I've wronged someone then it's only right to apologize or otherwise make amends, sure. But I'm not going to apologize for being born human and fallible. I'm not a telepath, precog, or a seer, so I don't have direct access to all the facts in any given situation.

  • We aren't sinning. It's kind of like asking why you don't practice certain aspects of the muslim faith. BECAUSE you don't believe in that.

What kind of question is this? Do you understand what the term athiest means?

  • Who would they repent to? Repentence is a religious thing. Since atheist have no allegience to anyon's idea of a God head, why would they repent to them?

  • we dont care what jesus said. thats why. to us the bible is a book. so, tell me why you dont study herbology at school? and do you wear wizard robes? no?
its the same thing for us and 'the bible'.

  • sin is an invention of childish theists.
    .
doesnt exist in my world.....only right & wrong.
    .
no need to confess to the tooth fairy if i run a red light. just get over it spanky and go read your buy-bull.

  • Who says we don't?

When I do something bad, I do my best to make amends to the person who was wronged. Isn't that like repenting?

  • i guess its your defination of repent that i disagree with. why would i pray to someone i dont belive in to forgive me, but we all repent in some way, feeling bad, appologizing, trying harder the next time....

  • Well simply put, they live by a different code of ethics..or rather more correctly put a different moral code. America's laws are not the same as laws in Iraq so why should we expect Iraqis to adhere to our laws? The same is true for Christians and religion x, y, z....... Or atheism which is still to me a religion but debated by the Yahoo community.

I'll give an example, if you are a member of a band a thieves, is stealing wrong to you? You can give it lip service by saying it's wrong but you would still do it because it is the code of ethics by which you govern your actions collectively.

To make it short, it is not a "shared" belief that repenting is necessary and that is why atheists don't repent. I mean in the light of things, the Christian definition of sin and the world's definition of "bad things" differ greatly. Simply put, I am a Christian, and I believe the bible is the word of God and that Jesus died for my sins. All I can do is spread what I know, but I cannot force anyone to comply. The best thing that you can do is pray for people but we are not forced to believe in Islam or Buddhism so how can we expect other religions to believe what we believe? We can't. God gave us ALL free will. It is up to atheists or whomever to decide their own ethical code and climate.

  • I apologize to people I accidentally hurt by my words or actions. But should I feel bad and repent for helping send two hungry shoplifters to jail this morning at work? No, in fact I knocked one of them down when he tried to put my boss into a chokehold, and then laughed about it later with my other coworkers. It would take until the proverbial hell freezes over before I would even consider 'repenting' for what I did this morning.

  • being an atheist myself there is no need to repent for anything as we dont believe in any kind of god or any kind of religion we just dont believe in any of that so we dont see the need to repent as there is no reason to do so because there is no after life so why waste time doing pointless things

  • The very concept of sin assumes some deity to take offense at one's actions.

There's no credible evidence to suggest any such entity or entities exist, so why worry about whether or not they might take offense?

First thing's first -- get yourself some evidence to suggest your god exists, and then we'll talk about what he does or doesn't like...

  • Look -- this knowledge will serve you all your life: atheists don't believe in God or in Jesus.

    Seriously, now.

EDIT: The concept of sin is a religious one. Without belief in your specific religion, there's no sin per se. In turn, there is no reason to worship Jesus if it wasn't for the fact that he can deliver us from sin. It's not only a circular argument, but your choice of religion is highly cultural.

How would you reply to someone from a different religion with a different concept of sin asking you to obey -- "at the very least" -- his concept of repenting?

  • Most people, atheists included, recognize when they behave badly, and find that such behavior makes life more difficult. Most reasonably people try to change that behavior in order to live a better life and be more successful.

Sin, on the other hand is a religious term. It does not mean bad behavior, but an offense against against god, thus atheists don't sin because there is no god.

Christians behave badly and consider that justified because it's what their Bible says to do. Whether it's bigotry, murder, stealing, rape, slavery ... whatever ... it's justified by the Bible.

WAIT .... No, you say ... the Bible doesn't say these things are good!

    Au contraire my friend...
The Bible specifically condones all of these things under at least certain circumstances. The Bible tells us when to steal from our enemies ... taking their land, property, etc. It says that in conquering a land, one can take the women against their will, that slaves can be taken. We can kill our children when they become unruly. Yes, all of this and more is permitted, and not at all sinful.

    Who has better morals?

  • excuse me??
how do you KNOW i dont 'repent'??

have you ever spoken to me before??

    have you ever asked me??

do you know for a fact i dont regret and ask forgiveness for any wrongs i have done???

just cos i dont ask YOUR GOD
doesn't mean i am unable to be sorry and admit when i am or have done wrong

if you dont take this q down, or re-word it in a more tolerant non insulting ignorant way
im reporting it and you and it will be forcefully taken down

  • Because atheists don't sin. We just screw up now and then.

"Sin" is an invented word used by religious leaders to keep their sheepling under control - just like you.

Edit @ "Selfish Point of View" - There's something very WRONG with you.

  • How arrogant of you to project that you have any idea what goes on in my private life. Just like a typical judgmental christian. You're all alike aren't you?

  • Why would they repent to someone who they don't believe in? If you mean make amends to someone who they've caused pain to, I think most try to do that.

It makes more sense than just praying for forgiveness to some long dead guy and walking on while the person you hurt remains in pain (as I have seen some Christians do).

  • repent to what? we don't believe in a supernatural sky daddy.

"oh, forgive me internet, for i have sinned." is that better?

  • You're a very confused individual. At one time i would have explained politely what an atheist is since you clearly don't know. I would have explained that "sin" is a word invented by religions. And then I would have pointed out that "repenting" is also a made up notion and that it actually serves no purpose at all beyond making the "repenter" feel better and does nothing to fix what was done.

However, now I'll just say you live your life I'll live mine and neither of us will be so arrogant as to think we know how the other should do so.

  • The thing to do- is not to repent- but to ask Christ to forgive you, and ask for His help to live right with whatever time you have left.

WHOSOEVER calleth upon the name of the LORD shall be SAVED...immediately (from Hell).

As far as whether or not people who say they don't believe in God get saved at the last minute, who could ever document that for certain?

Believing in God is not salvation- trusting in Christ is.

    The devils believe, and tremble.

  • Who would they be talking to? The God they don't believe in?

I mean, I see what you're saying, and it makes total sense from a Christian perspective... but you have to remember that other people don't see the world through your eyes. I consider myself a Christian... how is this any different from someone asking me why I won't just confess my sins to Allah or just try worshiping Zeus... why would I?

  • There's no such thing as sin. Jesus didn't say that. He said do unto others as you would want done onto you. That's it. Even if there was sin- we wouldn't "perish", because there's no such thing as hell. God loves me and would never send me to burn for eternity.

Get your head out of your butt.
