To atheists, how do you come to conclusion that everything that exists isn't by intelligent design?

  • I mean if i see a drawing on a piece of paper, i assume someone drew it. What is the difference between this and this perfectly functioning space and earth?

  • Everything is human to you?

You want to know the difference between:

    1. A drawing made by a human

    and

    2. Endless time and space and possibility of matter, energy and forces??

Do I really have to explain the difference?

    'perfectly functioning space and earth'

You mean this amazing chance that is a blip in the cosmos?

The Earth is not 'perfect', it is doomed.

In a few billion years our sun will do what all other suns do...and the earth will be gone.

  • What do you mean by 'perfectly functioning'?

Do you have any idea how big and empty space is, and how wasteful? We're a by-product.

This universe was not designed for us. That's like saying Westminster Cathedral was designed and built for the sake of a lichen that grows in a crack somewhere in the back in its crypt.

"intelligent design' is not only ridiculous, it is also immensely arrogant in its anthropocentrism.

  • .... And the puddle said "Wow there must be a god and he is so good to me, he has made this hole in the ground fit me exactly."

  • So, just exactly like a caveman, just cos you don't know the answer to a question, you automatically jump to the answer that makes the least SENSE - there must be a 'god' that made all this cos I don't understand science.

Don't you realise that an invisible space monster doing all this only raises MORE questions?
Who made the invisible sky critter?
    Why?
    What from?
What did he make all this from?
    Why?
IF he is already perfect what does he need we insignificant little creatures for?
Wouldn't he want to be worshiped by creatures that threatened him or that were at least a challenge to him?
What fun would he get from manufacturing us and then needing us to worship him?

I could go on and on with questions you would NOT be able to answer.
I wonder if you get the point?
I wonder if you have the courage to even consider those questions let alone formulate answers.

  • Its a logical fallacy to equate the universe or other natural systems with artificially created things. The Grand Canyon is a magnificent spectacle, it was formed basically by water erosion over a long enough geological time period. No intelligent designer needed. What you are saying equates with the "watchmaker" analogy which is even used as an example of a false analogy.

  • i don't see anything other than rhetoric to support your statement.

  • Because there is insufficient empirical evidence to support the hypothesis of an Intelligent Designer.

  • Because that's not even an accurate comparison at all. We know someone drew it because we know that humans are the only one's that can draw. (draw well, anyways) We know this because we know that we exist and that's what some of us do, make art.

How do you know the unknowable? (unknowable as of yet, anyway)

    This isn't a painting, it's reality.

  • Well said!

  • All life evolved by Natural Selection, if you have become adult without understanding this simple principle I really think you will never understand it

  • The natural world is characterised by wastage and brutality- the vast majority of species that have ever existed have gone extinct, evidently because they were too poorly "designed" to survive in their changing habitats. Need I say more.

  • I am not an atheist, but it is all in the attitude. Some people are spiritually inclined, others are not. Nobody can come to God unless He draws them to Him. Some are marked for everlasting life and some are not.

  • Read a book.

  • I'm not an atheist, I'm Catholic, and I'm a medical student.

You know what's one thing that I love about being in a medical field? Even if I'm a Catholic, and that not sufficient "data" sets my mind to believing that God created us all, there's always the fact that it makes me wonder a lot about my surroundings, it makes me feel awed.

Studying anatomy makes you think this, such a perfect body of a human's, who can ever thought of making one? A fellow human? No, the answer to that is only God. And I mean a perfect functioning human, not to mention all others in our surroundings. Makes you wonder, how did life come to start? What made it start? What made your cells start forming into a complex organism? Not magic, its a miracle. =) It's the working of God.

  • Yeah? You see a galaxy violently colliding with another and you assume someone threw it?

  • so.... someone must have intelligently designed a god then?

    welcome to RnS greenhorn.

  • If I see a puddle, I don't go about assuming that the hole was intelligently designed to fit the shape of the water. Quite on the contrary.

  • Um... a drawing isn't the universe. When I see a car, I assume it was manufactured on an assembly line. So, by your logic, the universe must have been made in a factory by underpaid space workers.

  • If I was intelligently designed, I want a word with the "designer" about a few flaws.
The location of my prostate gland, my eye defects, and wisdom teeth, for starters.

Women facing painful and dangerous childbirth might have more pressing issues: except presumably their situation was deliberately designed in as a punishment for sin. (Genesis 3:16)

That's apart from the detail that 99% of all known species are extinct.
    Very efficient "designing."
    ----
kimmy1917, please tell me you're joking:
    "a perfect body of a human's,"
The human body is nothing like perfect.
The human eye, my area of particular expertise, is amazing and a mess.
And how you can consider female labour and childbirth an ideal, perfect, is completely beyond me.

  • Hi There,

What do you mean with 'perfect functioning of space and earth' ?

I can see that on first sight things may look designed and maybe even perfect. But scratch beneath the surface and things quickly start to look different.

Question such as, why do most of us have to have our wisdom teeth pulled, why do so many pregnancies prematurely stop and babies die, what is the appendix for when it is such a hazard when inflamed etc etc.. our broken gene for producing vitamin c ..

If there is one thing nature tells us, and this is true for things like a 747 too, then that is that complex things have a simpler beginnings.

The things that are intelligently designed are designed by humans, based on scientific theory..

And to make you think a little, if a Lion is so perfectly designed to kill other animals and eat meat, how come that design is so perfect for life after the fall, when animals were created before the fall...??

    Regards,

  • If the drawing had the figures from one to a trillion atheists would conclude that happened by chance too.

  • Reverse the question - how did you come about to thinking that something designed the world?

  • What is the difference between a drawing you found and the universe?

    Hmmm let me see...

    EPIC FAIL.

  • Watchmaker argument. Look, that drawing has a purpose, and it's obviously crafted. It's left evidence of its maker on it. The universe isn't, doesn't and hasn't. The only reason we can observe it at all is because we evolved to. If conditions had been different, we wouldn't have noticed that we adapted to an environment that became increasingly more suited to us as we evolved, and assumed it was created for us.
The universe during the big bang followed the same rules as atoms in a particle accelerator.
To me, looking at it objectively, I don't think there is any room for a deity in the universe. All signs point to no deity.

  • Not an Atheist, but I dunno why, they just don't want to believe in the supernatural I guess.

Others don't want to be held accountable to the Creator.

And God had no beginning because He is eternal to those who ask how did God begin.

  • Perfect function you say?

just like the perfect functioning of nature? and the human body (disease ridden and full of suffering)?

nothing functions perfectly, the fact is that everything is full of flaws and not 100% suited for their jobs.

  • By observing the evidence.

Any lack of evidence cannot be automatically explained by inventing a sky pixie.

  • So snowflakes are cut out of ice sheets by invisible fairy creatures in the clouds?
