When you sew sheer fabric with a sewing machine do u need a different type needle for the stitches to hold?

  • i want to try and make some valences as I need 10 of them (many windows in my family room) and my machine is about 40 years old but still works.

  • No, same needle types... ballpoint for knits, sharp for woven, universal point may work for either (it's a compromise, and doesn't do as good a job for either knits or wovens).

For sheer fabrics, you're typically looking at a size 8/60 or 10/70 needle. Very lightweight thread (often sold as "blindhemming thread" or "lingerie thread" is useful. See http://www.atlantathread.com for examples.

If you have a straight stitch foot and needleplate on your machine, it'd probably be a good idea. Otherwise, use stabilizer below the fabric (and maybe even above) for good feeding. You may also find some of the water-soluble basting tape like Collins Wash A Way Wonder Tape useful for basting; it will come out in the first wash.

  • It's not a type of needle but the thickness of the needle. With sheer fabric, you will want a very fine needle that doesn't make large holes in the fabric, which will have a tendency to pull the fabric into the sewing machine. Also, with very fine fabric, you may also want to place a piece of tissue paper between the layers you're sewing, to keep the fabric from sliding against itself.
